Guide to Fiber Optic Pigtails
Joel Coffman2024-07-17T13:09:19+00:00Pigtails are fiber optic cables which are only terminated on one end. The other end is open fiber, which can then be spliced into a network by mechanical or fusion splicing. Fiber optic pigtails are most often used in that “last mile” of fiber to connect end users with the pre-existing underground and aerial fiber networks. Notably, all different types of fiber – indoor, outdoor, single mode and multimode configurations – can be produced as pigtails.
While you can terminate fiber in the field, it turns out that factory-attached connectors and purchased pigtails are typically superior for a couple of key reasons. Field terminations and unicam-style connectors are generally lower-quality solutions and can create network performance issues over time, due to their lower optical standards. Fractures and minor flaws in the fiber connector obstruct optical signals and compromise user experience. Splice-on connector solutions are also available, but are typically 2x more expensive than a classic splice in pigtail option, making them unsustainable to use in volume. Utilizing Megladon’s manufactured and factory-tested pigtails will save your technicians’ time and increase the quality and performance on all your installation jobs.
