Test Results for Military Termini Announced
Austin, Texas – Megladon Manufacturing Group announced today a completed project for the U.S. Military to pre-qualification test fiber optic termini processed with HLC® (Hardened Lens Contact) technology. The HLC® process uses a laser to harden the entire mating surface and maximizes coupling efficiency in fiber optic connections.
The termini, placed in a 38999 backshell, were tested for shock and vibration, temperature cycling and multiple matings based on military specifications. The results were extremely good and warrant additional testing.
Vibration testing was done in accordance with MIL-STD-810F, method 514.6. This test simulates some of the harshest conditions in the U.S. military. The mated pairs were tested in both the X axis and the Z axis. Each mated pair included a termini processed with HLC® technology and an industry standard termini. This method validated the durability gained by the HLC® process and also the interoperability of HLC® termini with termini that currently exist in applications.
Temperature testing consisted of a high temperature soak at 165 deg C and a low temperature soak at -55 deg C. The duration of each test was 24 hours. Each mated pair included a termini processed with HLC® technology and an industry standard termini. This method validated the durability gained by the HLC® process and also the interoperability of HLC® termini with termini that currently exist in applications.
Mating testing was designed to test the durability of the HLC® termination and to investigate its effects on industry standard terminations when the pair is repeatedly mated and demated. The mated pair included a termini processed with HLC® technology and an industry standard termini both placed in a 38999 backshell. Endface pictures and insertion loss data was collected after each 100 mates.
“Megladon’s HLC® technology was tested side by side with the industry standard process and performed very well. We did not see any evidence that would suggest the process would not complete full qualification testing. The conditions were extreme and we were very pleased with the results,” stated Daniel Hogberg (RCDD), Megladon’s Engineering Manager.
